A national moment, celebrating culture, creativity and the arts. On Friday 20th of September, doors will open across the county with special and unique events from the afternoon to late in the evening. Culture Night seeks to actively promote the belief that rich and varied culture is alive, treasured and nurtured in people’s lives.
Here is a look at some of the events to feature at this year’s Culture Night, with many more to come in the very near future.
Culture Night 2024 at Carlow County Museum
Join the fun at Carlow County Museum on Friday September 20th at 4pm to view their video A Journey Along the Carlow Corridor, The Archaeology of the Carlow Bypass’. Presented by Carlow County Museum in partnership with TII and Rubicon Heritage. Free Admission.
The video details the archaeological excavations undertaken in advance of the M9 Carlow Bypass being opened in 2008 and the exciting array of sites and finds that were found spanning County Carlow’s history from nearly 8,000 years ago!
Along the route of the Carlow bypass, M9 Motorway, from Prumplestown to Powerstown, nearly sixty archaeological sites were excavated. This was the largest ever single archaeological excavation undertaken in the county. The Journeys in Time exhibition in Carlow County Museum features County Carlow’s first medieval ring brooch (c. 12th – 14th centuries) found at Ballybannion; a red deer antler pick from Ballybar Lower; a variety of chert arrowheads; a porcellanite stone axe dating from the Neolithic period, possibly from County Antrim, and a 2mm Iron Age glass bead, which is the Museum’s smallest object. All of the artefacts on display as part of this exhibition are on loan from the National Museum of Ireland.
Through the exhibition and the video, have the chance to learn about how the hidden world of archaeology reveals our secrets and tails of past settlements and life in County Carlow.
Call into Carlow County Museum on Friday September 20th at 4pm to view the video and admission is free.
