Muine Bheag Arts is pleased to present COMMUNE – a programme of live events in the Muine Bheag Community Centre from 12th – 18th August. The programme invites artists, community organisers, graduates-in-residence, gardeners, zine-makers, visitors and friends to contribute to an evolving and expanding programme.

COMMUNE takes inspiration from self-organised communities and is based on values of collectivity, exchange and experimentation. The Community Centre will act as a shared space to host talks, workshops, performances, screenings and an exhibition of self-published artists’ books.

The programme includes contributions from:
Bagenalstown Community Gardens, Millie Case, Mollie Donegan, Síofra Egan & Ruby Fitzsimons, Phil Collins, Aoife Ní Dhuinn & Falon Weaver, Isadora Epstein & Cóilín O’Connell, Peter Glasgow & Alex Paveley, Chloe Maguire (Distro: The Reading Room), Rory Mullen, Rosalind Nashashibi, NIVAL, Rohana Perera, Amy Strzoda and Fabrizio Terranova.

Public Programme:

Distro: The Reading Room: 12th – 18th August, 11am – 5pm 
An exhibition of zines, artist books and self-published titles curated by Chloe Maguire

Distro: The Reading Room Exhibition Launch + Pocket Money Publication Launch: 12th August, 6pm
Distro: The Reading Room Exhibition Launch with discussion on self-publishing by Chloe Maguire (Distro curator) and Cóilín O’Connell (Brass Neck Press).
Pocket Money Publication Launch by Cóilín O’Connell and Isadora Epstein with reading by Isadora Epstein

Talk: NIVAL (National Irish Visual Arts Library): 14th August, 1pm
NIVAL will present a talk on artist books and share a selection of books from their collection

Bagenalstown Community Gardens Tour + Talk: 14th August, 5pm 
Tour of the Bagenalstown Community Gardens and talk on biodiversity by Tommy Cox (BIG)

Film Screening: Donna Haraway: Story Telling for Earthly Survival – 14th August, 7pm
A film on the life and work of pioneering thinker, feminist and science fiction enthusiast Donna Haraway by Fabrizio Terranova

Vision Board Workshop: Prancing, drifting, foaming ‘round in the eddy: 15th August, 5pm
Aoife Ní Dhuinn and Falon Weaver will host a workshop on creating a vision board while inviting you to reflect on your dreams, share your hopes for the future and discuss what it means to be an adult today

Film Screening: Bring Down the Walls – Phil Collins: 16th August, 6pm
A documentary by artist Phil Collins that examines the injustices of America’s prison-industrial complex and the power of house music as a catalyst for human connection

Céilí Dance: Amy Strzoda – 16th August, 7:30pm
Amy Strzoda will host an evening of collective movement and dance inspired by céilí dancing. No experience required

Graduate Cohort Presentation: 17th August, 5pm
Presentation by graduates-in-residence Millie Case, Mollie Donegan, Síofra Egan and Ruby Fitzsimons

Performance: The Band Keeps Playing On – 17th August, 7pm
Peter Glasgow will explore themes within the honky tonk genre of country music using a unique self-built steel guitar together with drummer, Alex Paveley, in an informal mix of talking, playing and practising

Film Screening: Electrical Gaza – Rosalind Nashashibi + Talk, 18th August, 4pm
A film by artist Rosalind Nashashibi which presents Gaza as a place from myth: isolated, suspended in time, difficult to access and highly charged. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Palestinian Solidarity and Anti-Racist Activist Rohana Perera

Publication Launch + Performance: Rory Mullen, 18th August, 6:30pm
