The Columban Way Pilgrim Walk for Peace, Healing and Well-being: A Journey of Discovery and Reflection

Explore the serene beauty and rich heritage of the Columban Way during Heritage Week as we follow in the footsteps of the inspirational sixth-century monk, St. Columbanus. Born at the foothills of Mount Leinster in County Carlow, this transformative walk covering in total some 570km promises time and space for quiet reflection and a peaceful journey through some of Ireland’s most picturesque landscapes. Participants can choose to walk the entire route, complete the full County Carlow stretch, or enjoy specific sections for a single or multiple day trip.

From August 17th to 21st, join fellow walkers in Carlow on a route that ultimately connects all the way to Bangor in County Down. This segment in Carlow provides a tranquil and enriching experience, perfect for those looking to connect with nature and appreciate Ireland’s biodiversity along the River Barrow and the majestic Blackstairs Mountains. This journey is not just a walk; it’s an opportunity to connect deeply with nature, appreciate the serene environment, enjoy the company of others and rejuvenate your spirit through personal reflection and contemplation.

Historical and Cultural Richness

The Columban Way in Carlow connects towns and villages who have a deep appreciation of the lasting legacy of St Columbanus in this area, bringing together communities of different faiths and cultural traditions. Modelled on the renowned Camino de Santiago, the Columban Way features a tapestry of historical sites set amidst the landscapes of early Christian Ireland. Begin your walk at the historic ecclesiastical site of St. Mullins, then travel along the tranquil River Barrow to the charming Georgian village of Borris. Continue your journey to Mount Leinster, the birthplace of Columbanus, before arriving at the nearby village of Myshall. Follow quiet country roads leading to Bagenalstown, where the route joins the Barrow Way, ultimately reaching Athy in County Kildare.
