From there a rugged path, narrow in places, runs through deciduous woodland before passing an old mass rock to join the old towpath immediately adjacent to the river, where horses pulled barges for transport. After a short distance, Ballykeenan Lock is reached and from there the walk re-enters the forest to return to the starting point.
