The trail hugs the River Barrow, offering stunning views of the Barrow Valley, known for its lush landscapes and serene waters. As you stroll along this ancient route, once used by horses to pull barges along the waterway, you’ll view aspects of Ireland’s industrial past, including 250-year-old lock gates that still stand as a testament to a bygone era. These locks which once facilitated the movement of goods along the river, now serve as picturesque landmarks along your journey.
This walk is not just a feast for the eyes but also for nature lovers. The Barrow Way is home to a variety of wildlife, including vibrant bird species and colourful wildflowers that line the riverbanks. Keep your eyes peeled for herons silently fishing by the water’s edge, or kingfishers flashing their brilliant blue feathers as they dart across the river. With every step, you’ll be immersed in the rich biodiversity of the area, with opportunities to pause and soak in the tranquillity of the surroundings.
