The Kavanaghs originally owned Ballyloughan Castle before the Bagenal family of nearby Bagenalstown took possession, followed by the Bruen family in the early 19th century.
The exact construction date of Ballyloughan Castle is unknown, but it is believed to have been built sometime in the 13th century. The architectural style suggests that the Normans built it.
The castle once featured a large open courtyard, surrounded by a curtain wall and a moat. Although much of it is now in ruins, a small square tower and the entrance gate, flanked by two large rounded towers, still stand.
Visitors cannot access the castle, but it can be viewed from a nearby adjacent gate
