Ballymurphy is a gentle hillside village captured in a glen on mountain slopes which derives its name from Matthew Murphy of Clonroche, Co. Wexford a powerful landowner and builder of a castle in the area in the mid-17th century. Ballymurphy is the first village encountered on the County Carlow side of the Blackstairs Mountains by the traveller passing close to the picturesque Sculloge Gap.
The beauty of this village is strengthened by the pride of its people, which is reflected in its overall character and amazing display of flowers, full of style.
It’s the best such display of flowers I’ve seen in Ireland, and matches any village flower displays I’ve seen in France
