Dark stories from Ireland’s folkloric past with comedic storyteller and folklorist Hugh Cooney.
Beginning at the entrance to VISUAL, participants will enter an experience, guided through the dark, eerie grounds of Carlow College, into the silent, terrifying depths of the galleries at night.
Step into the otherworld with storyteller Hugh Cooney as he spins yarns about changelings, the swept and the sinister realities surrounding these stories. This trip asks of adults… would you cut down the fairy tree? It’s like a gnarled claw coming up out of the ground, dragging the light from the sky. Chop it down, dig up the stump and stare into the abyss.
Hugh Cooney is a comedic storyteller and folklorist who has performed at numerous festivals including Glastonbury and Ireland’s St. Patricks Day Festival. Hugh is an artist who weaves Irish traditional practices into his multimedia performances. With this work we are invited to look at our own traditions and rituals, which Hugh reveals as hidden in plain sight.
After cutting his teeth as a story teller in the national leprechaun museum and 6 years as a storyteller in London he returned to Ireland wearing and Arain jumper with a shillelagh under his arm and a twinkle in his eye. More information on Hugh Cooney’s work and previous projects here
